A Study on Volunteer¢¥s Activities and Opinions about Home Nursing of terminally ill patients

Abstract
Along with the increasing complexity of the social and economic environment, there has been a rapid increase in the number of persons with chronic illneses including cancer. The expansion of medical insurance since 1989 has resulted in excessive demands on health services. The rotating rate of Hospital beds has been decreasing and . Hospital care is limited. Early discharge of hospitalized patients will place a high demand on the provision of home nursing care by highly skilled nurses.
The problem addressed by this study was to examine the activities of volunteers in a hospice home care service to terminally ill patients and to ascertain the need for professional nursing care.
For this study, structured interview was carried out and a questionnaire was administered from October 16 to November 2, 1990. The study population consisted of 15 Volunteers who worked in Y University¢¥s Hospice Care Program.
The following results were obtained.
1. Volunteers were almost all women ten, ranging in age from 21 to 70. Their educational level was high. Among the volunteers, ten had them-selves been hospitalized.
2. The first encounter with the patient for many volunteers was at home after being discharged. Home visiting averaged once or twice a week. The length of the home visits ranged from one to three hours.
3. Activities which volunteers had difficulty were those related to physical care, care of the family and legal problems. Activities in which they were engaged were Activities of Daily Life(ADL), spiritual care and support care.
4. Opinions of volunteers wer solicited about the problems of pain control. They suggested that physical care and equipment and material supplies rged for Volunteers preferred working sing members of the team rather than members. This study supports the of Home Nursing care for terminally ill patients. Government financial support for Home Nursing services was recommended. The urgent need for educational preparation of nurses for home nursing was emphasized.
